Point streak posts Gomez in NHL All-Rookie Team
The only player to appear in each of New Jersey's 82 games during the regular season, Scott Gomez led all rookies in points (70), assists (51), power play points (27) and shots (204). He established a Devils franchise rookie record assists and points. He was selected the NHL Rookie of the Month for November after posting 15 points in 11 games. He tied a Devils rookie record with an eight-game point streak (11 points in games from Nov. 12 through Dec. 1) and also recorded streaks of six and seven games. Gomez joins All-Rookie Team members Brad Stuart of the San Jose Sharks and Michael York of the New York Rangers as finalists for the 1999-2000 Calder Trophy as the League's outstanding rookie. The 1999-2000 All-Rookie team, announced today by the National Hockey League, includes four players who have helped their respective teams to the Eastern Conference Finals: forward Scott Gomez and defenseman Brian Rafalski of the New Jersey Devils and goaltender Brian Boucher and forward Simon Gagne of the Philadelphia Flyers. Defenseman Brad Stuart of the San Jose Sharks and forward Mike York of the New York Rangers are the other members of the All-Rookie team, the voting for which is conducted by the Professional Hockey Writers' Association at the conclusion of the regular season. To qualify for rookie status, a player cannot have played more than 25 games in any single preceding season nor in six or more games (in any major professional league) in any two preceding seasons. A player also must not have reached his 26th birthday by September 15 of the season in which he is eligible. Rookie team voting selects one goaltender, two defensemen and three forwards. The results are tabulated by the international accounting firm of Ernst & Young. |
