“Chicanos in a Changing Society” is a course designed to explore the lives
and roles of Chicanos and Chicanas. It introduces students to the Chicano
community, its historical, political and social development. Particularly
important in the United States today, the class reviews the ways in which
Chicano communities interrelate with Anglo and multicultural societies. The
class will explore important historical moments including the Anglo invasion of
Texas, the invasion of Mexico and the Mexican American War of 1846-1848, the
colonial labor system, the occupation of New Mexico and Arizona and the loss of
California to EuroAmericans. The class will further investigate the social and
economic development of the US Southwest, deportation of the 1930s, World War
II, Chicano Movements in the 1960s. Finally, the class will take a look at the
current and future status of Chicanos in the United States.
Given the political climate in the United States today and the raging debates
about immigrant rights, the status of English language laws, the reduction of
services and continuing discrimination against Chicanos, this sociology class is
a great place for people to investigate the history of the Chicano people within
the context of academic rigor, not emotional rhetoric.
